Cathy Joyner believes gift giving should be joyful.
That's the premise guiding Bliss, the gift and home goods shop Joyner recently opened in Banner Hall at 4465 I-55 North in Jackson. It's located on the first floor of the building, just outside the entrance to Broadstreet Baking Co. & Café.
"I enjoy helping people," she said. "You get pleasure out of giving a gift you're excited about."
The store stocks a variety of merchandise at various prices, including tableware and casserole dishes, handbags and wallets, dog beds and cat toys, jewelry and candles, lamps and tables — and more. Merchandise for men, such as desk sets, shaving products, bookends, lamps, clocks and backgammon sets occupies a section of the store known as the man cave.
The store will eventually offer a bridal registry and gift delivery service to brides, but customer service is its main focus during the holiday shopping season.
Bliss will extend its hours for the holidays starting on Dec. 17. It will be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Dec. 17 through Dec. 23 and from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Dec. 24. It is currently open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and by appointment.
"I want the door to be open in case someone wants to grab a gift," Joyner said. "I want the store to be where it's easy to get a good gift, especially for a man who hates to shop."
Joyner said she scoured retail markets in Atlanta and Dallas, keeping an eye out for items she had not seen in other local shops. With a daughter at the University of Mississippi and a son at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, she managed to snag one-of-a-kind finds at antique shops along the way, she said.
